In the beginning we called ourselves Southern
California Physicians for Human Rights. The organization was created in 1979 by a
group of gay physicians to provide support and networking opportunities to gay, lesbian,
and bisexual physicians, as well as education to all physicians about the medical and
mental health needs of gay, lesbian, and bisexual patients.
Monthly meetings were
initiated, originally in members' homes, that combined social mixers with medical
presentations pertinent to gay, lesbian, and bisexual health care. Later, special events
such as pool and holiday parties were added to our calendar.
In 1997 we changed
our name to Southern California Lambda Medical Association (SCLMA).
With over 200 members, SCLMA now is considered to be one of the oldest
and most active gay & lesbian medical organizations in the country. |
